The strong stems can easily handle the large heavy, blue/purple variegated flowers that transform to a green-hue with maturity. As with most Hydrangeas, flower color can be manipulated with a few simple additions to the soil. For blue flowers, the soil must be more acidic and for pink flowers your soil must tend toward alkaline.The bloom color can be changed by adding aluminum sulfate, or use lime to intensify the deep colors of the flowers. No matter what color you want, make sure you feed generously in spring and autumn to be rewarded with great flower performance.Rio Hydrangea is a tough little plant and even mildew resistant.
